FATHER'S DAY SONG

I'll be honest. This has been one of the hardest projects to get right. And I'm not convinced it's completely there...(though I shouldn't be saying that about my own song. Yikes!) but I'm releasing it anyway.

The sheet music, recordings and video will all be available tomorrow (Saturday, May 12th) by noon. That would still give you 5 weeks to teach the song before Father's Day.

Listen to the song and get it here.

And I'll be posting more about the song tomorrow. See you then!

Here's a little bit more about the process I've gone through, which has been, well, not as smooth as I had hoped:

There’s a song I used to love when I was really young – a popular song that rose in the charts and played on the radio over and over.

The lyrics, when you just read them, were…well…here they are – you can make your own judgment:

“Our house is a very very very fine house / With two cats in the yard
Life used to be so hard / Now everything is easy ‘cause of you.
And our la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la ....”

[54 la’s in a row and then a repeat]

My intention here isn’t to bash the lyrics. Rather, it’s to praise the music. The music compensated enough for the lyrics that it ended up being a great song.

Music can do that.

So I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m writing about “Our House” instead of my Father’s Day song. Well…ahem…it’s because I finished writing the Father’s Day song and sent it to @MasaFukuda and then a few days later, I emailed him and said, “Don’t record that song. I’m going to re-write it.”

And it’s not the lyrics I’m rewriting. It’s the music. I really love the lyrics, but I couldn’t even remember my own song the next day well enough to sing it, and that’s not a good sign.

The lyrics deserve something better. Great music may rescue bad lyrics, but I’m not so sure great lyrics can rescue bad music.

------

And I just need to say one more thing.

EVERY time I’ve put a song out there that I don’t personally love, I regret it. I’ve done that a few times, just to meet a deadline, and I’m always sorry I did. I'm not going to do that any more.

In any case, thanks for being patient.

Thanks for being such an instrument to bring love to the world!!
