THE MESSAGE

Okay. I admit it. I'm a terrible blogger. I go on a blogging splurge -- writing several posts in a row -- and then...nothing. For a long time. In fact, the last time I blogged was Thanksgiving 2014. Wow.

Yesterday, 389 people visited my site. I don't know how they felt, but when I visit a site and see that the last post was nearly a year ago, I figure there's nothing compelling there. 'Cuz if the owner of the site doesn't care all that much about the message, then it's a fairly good bet nobody else will.

That said, I DO care about the message -- and that's why I put my songs out there in the first place. Can I just say it's a really scary and vulnerable thing for me to do that? Totally and completely out of my comfort zone. And when I posted my very first YouTube video, I thought maybe 50 or 100 people would see it, and even THAT made me nervous. When I got my first negative comment on YouTube, I stewed about it for 2 or 3 days. And when I got my first really nasty comment, I was prepared to take the video down and just forget about the whole thing.

By now, I'm a little more thick-skinned. But it's still out of my comfort zone.

And there's no reason on earth for me to be doing this...except that I care about the message. And so, as I celebrate the re-beginning of my blogging career, whether anybody reads this message or not, I just want to put myself on record:

Jesus is the Christ. He is the Son of God, our Savior and Redeemer. He is the light and life of the world. Without Him, we would be hopelessly lost -- unreclaimed and unreclaimable. That's the message. And everything I say in the future will be tied to that message -- for it's the most important and transcendent truth of all time, and the one that gives everything else meaning.

And by the way, the reason people are still coming to my site -- even though I'm a terrible blogger -- is because of "THE MIRACLE." A song that says more than I could say in a thousand blog posts:

Jesus is a God or miracles
Nothing is at all impossible to Him.
But I know this: Of all His miracles
The most incredible must be
The miracle that rescues me.

Until next time -- which I promise will be sooner than a year from now,

Shawna

I substituted in primary yesterday. It was the first time I heard the song “Miracle”. The kids loved it and I was so touched by it. I will be sharing the link with all my family and friends so they can hear and see the video. Thank u!

I just found your song The Miracle today as I have been preparing a talk on the fall/atonement for Sacrament meeting. I LOVE IT. I immediately bought it so I could have those beautiful words forever. I would like to ask your permission to tell your story of how the song came about and share the words as part of my talk. Would that be alright? Your testimony is such a part of your reason for writing the song and I feel impressed to share it.if you feel comfortable with my doing so. Thank you for your testimony and your talent and this beautiful song. You have truly touched my life this morning. Thak you Thank you Thank you!!!

Hi Laurene — To answer your first question, I didn’t realize there was a free link out there for “Stand.” I have removed that, but will be putting “Stand” on my website to be ordered for $2.99. I’m not sure where you saw the free link to “Do You Have Room?” But that one isn’t available for free right now. It may be later in the season.

To answer your second question — I’ve actually been asked this question before, and maybe it will be helpful to other people if I answer it publicly: All songwriters make certain trade-offs between the literal and the artistic. I chose to use “a thousand people” instead of the more cumbersome “five thousand people” and “with a loaf or two of bread” instead of precisely numbering the loaves and the fishes…it just seemed less wordy.

You asked what Bible story I’m referring to – In both stories (feeding of the four thousand and the five thousand), Jesus multiplied loaves of bread (and fish) to feed a large crowd. So saying that He ‘fed a thousand people with a loaf or two of bread’ is telling the story — either story — but not the complete story. I wasn’t trying to rewrite the Bible — I just made a choice based on the sound of the words, the meter, and the simplicity required of a children’s song.

That said, if you feel more comfortable with using more exact numbers when you sing it, you have my permission. I appreciate, by the way, that you asked. :)

    Happy singing,
    Shawna

I would want to change a 1,000 people to 5,000 people in the “Miracle” song. I would be interested in knowing what New Testament story you are referencing with feeding a 1,000 people with a loaf or two of bread. Thank you! Beautiful song!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aczi3GBn3UU There is a link posted with this video of “Stand” on You Tube for free copies. It is your purchase page though and I do not see “Stand” for free download or for purchase. Is it, perhaps, found on lds.org for download? I see that Do You Have Room" is there for free download.
